Those of you who follow me on Twitter have probably heard me babbling about this book, Warchild by Karin Lowachee. It's not a perfect book, but I loved many of the characters so much that it's pretty much taken over my life, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys angsty, subtext-filled m/m relationships, sci-fi, and/or coming-of age stories.

IDK if anyone else thinks this would even be a remotely good idea, but here goes:

Sometimes I find it inspiring to try to engage with a trope that, for whatever reason, turns me off, or something otherwise popular that I am kind of lukewarm about. It forces me to think—do I not like this trope because I haven’t considered all of the possibilities? Is there something about the way I’ve seen it handled that just doesn’t ping my interest? Am I not giving it a fair chance? Can I play with it/subvert it?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with disliking tropes, just like there’s nothing wrong with liking them. I don’t think everyone has to give everything a chance. But I am wondering how many people out there find the idea of a meme dedicated to grappling with ideas you hate/dislike/are ambivalent about/just think “WTF is the big deal???” in any way stimulating. You would simply pick one (or more) tropes and write, draw, or—basically just do something with it.

Lately I have probably been annoying everyone on Twitter with how much I've been talking about Johanna, so I figured I may as well bite the bullet and make an LJ post for people to talk about her, rec fics, art, meta and fanmixes, etc.

I don't care if you are knocked up, I'll rip your throat out. )

Always-female!Arthur fucks Eames with a strap-on. AKA "fic I wrote when I should've been writing other stuff because I needed to finish something goddamnit. Thanks to [personal profile] annejumps for putting the idea in my head and for betaing, and to [personal profile] anatsuno, also for betaing :D

Arthur is good with people when she wants to be. )

HIGHLIGHTS OF MY HOLIDAY SEASON:

-Discovered Avengers and Young Avengers comics. I ordered Avengers: World Trust and Red Zone, and have been reading YA on Comical, a free open-source comic reader. I may or may not have a completely inappropriate crush on Iron Lad.

-I don't even want to talk about school. Seriously. I break out in hives.

-Discovered that if I run out of time to do the dishes before having to leave the state for three weeks, I can slap some saran wrap on top and put them in the refrigerator. This is, I suspect, some combination of clever and sad.

-Watching Battlestar Galactica with Katie (yjudaes on Livejournal.)
-sneaqui, yjudaes, night_reveals and I were supposed to have a Skype cosplay Thor-watching party. We never got around to the Thor-watching, but I wore my red cape anyway.

-Talking about the (fake) Tom Hardy naked picture with [personal profile] being_here, which obviously lead to all sorts of discussion of things one could do with Eames's ass.

-Realization that living on one's own makes one extremely grateful to receive presents like socks, detergent, and flannel sheets.

-I wrote a fic for dream-holiday at Livejournal.

-I have so much stuff to read for Yuletide. A rec post is forthcoming.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH AND A JOYOUS YULE TO EVERYONE! SORRY IF I LEFT ANYTHING OUT. I LOVE YOU ALL.

Give me a character or a pairing (or both) and I will tell you three tidbits of my personal headcanon for them.

This is something I wrote for Cherrybina's Fluff Meme.
Sadly, it's not all that fluffy.

Dead, Arthur thinks for approximately the thirty thousandth time in fifteen days.

Eames is dead.

Dissolved, at best. At worst

Worst is more than he can bear to think about at the moment. He’ll just stick with dissolved.

Arthur’s always been pragmatic. He knew getting involved with a blockade runner was risky business, that (based on calculations he’d done himself) Eames had roughly a 1 in 5 chance of getting caught by the Stellium forces. And the Stellium had, by official decree as of six months ago, stopped taking prisoners.

Summary: A torturer falls in love with his victim.
Warnings: torture, pain, violence, discussions of character death. But things may not be what they seem.

The room detected life. It lit up, a retina-bleaching cube of neon ultrawhiteness, and the light’s revealing was so thick and so extreme it felt like another form of covering. )

Title: Erasure
Summary: No one really talks about it much, but forgers tend to burn out young. When Eames loses his skill, he has to examine his past, re-evaluate his identity, and figure out what to do with the rest of his life. (The fact that he's slowly falling for a former coworker complicates matters somewhat.)
Notes: Originally written for ae-match.

Arthur is the last person he wants to see reflected behind him in the mirror right now. )

To take some of the pressure of posting off of myself, I've decided that for awhile (a couple of months) I'm going to handle the distribution of my fics a bit differently. Instead of posting directly to my journal and promoting anything via comms, I'm going to post the summaries of my fics to my journals, and anyone who wants to read the fic will be able to ask me for a download link.

I'm not doing this because of any wank I've received or for any other particularly dramatic reason. Eventually I will post the fics publicly. For a while I just want to try to take a slightly more low-stakes, playful, experimental approach to writing, which is something I have an easier time doing if I don't have to worry about how (or if) the fic will be received.

I've started working on the fics I owe people for the holidays, so I'm going to try to get those all out to everyone in the next couple of days!

My new dreamwidth is here. I'm still waiting for everything to import, but everything that's posted on this journal will also be there.

Since I am really, really terrible at remembering to take things to the post office, I was thinking instead that for the holidays I would send people e-cards plus ficlets.

So, if you would like a ficlet (100-300 words) from me, please send me

1. Your email address (or where you'd like me to send the ecard)
2. Which holidays (if any) you are celebrating this season
3. Which fandom you'd like me to write
4. A word or sentence prompt.

Fandoms I'll write for: Inception, Suits, Star Trek series & films, Hunger Games, Homestuck, Harry Potter, various movies & books. Also crossovers, (just ask)

Porn or gen.

Happy almost-winter, everyone! <3

P.S. All comments are screened to keep your email addresses and requests private.

WELL, SINCE EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT...
I'm sure there are some ships I'm forgetting, too.

RULES:

1. Think of up to 20 ships you support.
2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
3. Have your f-list guess as many of the ships as they can.
4. Fandom hints will be given if asked in the comments.

HINT: 6 of these are slash, one is femslash, and two are het.

1. The con man and the destroyer of worlds
2. The young despot and his speechwriter
3. The exiled patriot and the greenhorn Garak and Bashir, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] crowdog66
4. A guy who likes lanterns and someone who likes to pull his figurative pigtails Arthur and Eames, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] yjudaes
5. The irritable lumberjack and the pretty boy
6. The dutiful girl and the flighty broad Kanaya and Rose, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] gelbwax
7. The doubting ex-monk and the one who dreams of the devil
8. The resistance fighter and a collaborator who finally decides that enough's enough
9. The jazz fan and the ex-pot dealer

So from here on out my LJ name is ladderax.

It comes from this:

According to Material Cultures,
"The Ladderax System consists of a number of upright ladders, supporting shelves and cabinets. These are very simply fixed by resting on steel support rods, hooked on to the rungs of the ladders. They fit snugly into grooves under the shelves and cabinets. This allows the system to be very easily assembled and… gives the utmost flexibility. Ladderax does not require any permanent fixing to a wall, because it self-supports. Ladderax is furniture you can move about and rearrange as easily as you can change your mind."

I'd been using metacheese for years and I just figured it was time for a new name.
(Maybe it will also make me a better writer! I CAN ONLY HOPE.)

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'. Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and...well, you know the drill. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a song, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

(Since all the stores in my town are closed and I cannot stuff myself with fun-sized goodies, distract me by letting me give you things.)
